Addiction Diagnosis & Signs
This page is informational, not a diagnosis. A licensed clinician can tell you whether drinking or drug use has become a substance use disorder — but these are the signs worth paying attention to, and what to do next.
Signs worth paying attention to
- Drinking or using to cope with stress, sleep, or the comedown from a shift
- Needing more to get the same effect (increased tolerance)
- Difficulty cutting back, even when you’ve tried
- Mood changes or irritability tied to use
- Strained relationships with family or coworkers
- Impaired job performance or behavior changes others have noticed
- Continuing to use despite negative consequences
Early support can make change easier and more effective. None of this has to mean the most severe version of what you're picturing — it means it's worth a conversation.
You don't have to be "a certain kind" of user
We are contracted to take primary mental health, primary substance use, or both — you do not have to struggle with trauma to come to GRIT for substance use, and you don't have to have hit a particular rock bottom to qualify for help. If it's affecting your life, it's worth a call.
